The guide is not a ranking or endorsement and is not intended to tell anyone which organisation to join or support. It is designed to make public information easier to find and compare.

Scope of this guide

This guide is designed to help dancers, families and others involved in DanceSport understand the organisations and competitive pathways they may encounter when participating in DanceSport in the UK.

In this resource, UK refers to the United Kingdom, comprising England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It describes the DanceSport landscape covered by the guide, rather than the nationality of the people using it. Dancers may therefore be of any nationality while training, competing or otherwise participating in DanceSport in the UK.

The guide currently covers the UK DanceSport organisations reviewed by Dance Sport Trust for this resource. Further organisations and pathways relevant to people participating in DanceSport in the UK may be added as the review develops.

BDC

British Dance Council

Public role: States that it is “accepted as the regulatory body” for Ballroom, Latin American, Sequence and Freestyle dancing throughout England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.

Legal status: Registered company.

Wider position: Publishes rules, championship routes and a corporate-member structure including teacher, professional and amateur organisations.

BDSA

British DanceSport Association

Public role: The BDSA’s own published description states that it is “the Governing Body for dance sport in all its forms across the United Kingdom.”

Legal status: Registered company.

Wider position: Publishes competition, membership and safeguarding structures together with a Partnerships & Associations page.

DPA

Dance Promoters Association

Public role: Its Rules state aims including promoting “the business of dancing especially through competitive events” and representing “as a unified body the general interests of the promoter.”

Legal status: Legal status not confirmed.

Wider position: Publishes promoter and adjudicator routes and the DPA/BDF National League.

BCDC

British Competitors Dancesport Corporation

Public role: Describes itself as providing “the voice for British dancesport competitors” and states that members can raise questions or issues for BCDC to take to the British Dance Council.

Legal status: Registered company.

Wider position: Publishes competitor representation routes connected with the British Dance Council and wider DanceSport structures.

EADA

English Amateur Dancesport Association

Public role: Describes itself as “The Voice of English Amateur Dancers” and says it provides support and representation for amateur dancers in England.

Legal status: Registered charity and company.

Wider position: The Sports Councils Recognition Master List lists EADA in the England column for Dance: Ballroom/Latin

BDF

The Ballroom Dancers' Federation Ltd

Public role: Public wording includes “Championing the Dance World. Supporting Its Dancers.” Its Rule Book objects include protecting the interests of competitors, demonstrators, adjudicators, teachers and coaches.

Legal status: Registered company.

Wider position: States that BDF delegates represent members at British Dance Council meetings and publishes competition, education, training and member-support activity.

BDC

British Dance Council

League: Operates the BDC Championship League.

Published structure: Public rankings include Couples, Solo, Sequence and Professional sections.

Points / rankings: The published points structure uses Standard, BDC Championship and Premier BDC Championship event levels. The public page states that rankings are calculated from each couple’s best eight results.

BDSA

British DanceSport Association

League: Operates the BDSA Sovereign League.

Published structure: Published categories include Couples and Solo across Juvenile, Junior, Youth, Amateur and Senior groups.

Points / rankings: Points are accumulated across approved competitions and used to produce league rankings.

DPA

Dance Promoters Association

League: Public material identifies the DPA/BDF National League.

Published structure: Published sections include Juvenile, Junior, Adult, Solo, Couples, Sequence, Ballroom and Latin.

Points / rankings: Public National League material includes results, Dance Charts and points information.

BCDC

British Competitors Dancesport Corporation

League: No separate current BCDC-operated league was identified in the reviewed public material.

Published structure: No separate BCDC league-category structure was identified in the reviewed public material.

Points / rankings: No separate public BCDC points table or competitor-ranking system was identified.

EADA

English Amateur Dancesport Association

League: No separate current EADA-operated league was identified in the reviewed public material.

Published structure: EADA’s public calendar directed users to the DPA calendar.

Points / rankings: No separate public EADA points or ranking structure was identified.

BDF

The Ballroom Dancers' Federation Ltd

League: A separately titled BDF-operated league was not established in the reviewed public material. DPA public material uses the heading DPA/BDF National League.

Published structure: DPA/BDF National League material publishes Couples and Solo categories across Ballroom, Latin and Sequence.

Points / rankings: Results, Dance Charts and points information are published within the DPA/BDF National League material.

BDC

British Dance Council

Categories: Public material lists Juvenile, Junior, Youth, Amateur, Senior, Over 50, 60+ and Professional categories.

Formats: Public material identifies Solo, Teacher/Student, Pro-Am, Freestyle, Formation, Classical Sequence and Inventive Dance, together with all-male, all-female, mixed-sex and open-to-all couple categories, and Solo all-male, Solo all-female and Solo open to all.

Other participation: Competition and championship routes are published across these different disciplines and participant groups.

Categories: Publishes competition routes for Juvenile, Junior, Youth, Amateur, Professional and Senior dancers.

Formats: Also identifies Couples, Solo, Professional/Amateur and Student/Teacher participation.

Other participation: These routes sit alongside the BDSA Sovereign League for Couples and Solo dancers.

DPA

Dance Promoters Association

Categories: Publishes Juvenile, Junior and Adult routes, with Adult categories including Amateur, Under 21, Senior Open, Over 50 and Over 60.

Formats: Publishes Couples and Solo Ballroom & Latin, Classical Sequence and Modern Sequence formats.

Other participation: These categories and formats form part of the DPA/BDF National League structure.

BCDC

British Competitors Dancesport Corporation

Categories: Public material refers to competition and event activity, but a separate published BCDC competition-category structure was not identified in the reviewed material.

Formats: Public material refers to camps, training days, workshops, showcase activity and previous competition-related activity.

Other participation: Information about these activities appears across BCDC’s website and social-media routes.

Access: Membership application is through the online system and requires sign-in or registration.

British Competitors Dancesport Corporation

Membership / registration routes: Membership is open to current professional and amateur competitors registered with the British Dance Council. Amateur membership is stated as non-voting.

Parent & youth: Public material includes parent, family and guardian wording.

Access: Joining requires direct contact for the membership form and payment information.

EADA

English Amateur Dancesport Association

Membership / registration routes: Publishes individual amateur membership, including membership for under-18 dancers.

Parent & youth: Parent or guardian details are included on the membership form for under-18 members.

Access: Online and postal application routes are public; Members Area content requires login.

The Ballroom Dancers' Federation Ltd

Membership / registration routes: Public material identifies Full, Student/Under-16 and Affiliate routes, alongside Associate Membership and Amateur Registrants.

Parent & youth: Student/Under-16 routes are identified, with parent/guardian wording for child competitors.

Access: Eligibility and prices are publicly stated, with application and payment routes available. Full Members can attend and vote at General Meetings.

British Dance Council

Representation: Amateur routes, corporate-member organisations and role-based contacts, including an Amateur Membership Officer, are publicly identified.

Voting / consultation: No individual amateur, parent or youth voting route was identified in the reviewed public material.

Support routes: Public contact, safeguarding and complaints routes are available.

BDSA

British DanceSport Association

Representation: Amateur and Parent or Legal Guardian membership routes are publicly listed, together with a Youth Advisory Board for ages 16–24.

Voting / consultation: The Youth Advisory Board provides a published youth involvement and consultation route. Formal voting rights for Youth Advisory Board members were not confirmed in the reviewed public material.

Support routes: Public contact, safeguarding and reporting routes, including BeSafe, are available, alongside Grievance and Disciplinary policies.

DPA

Dance Promoters Association

Representation: Its Rules include representation of promoters’ general interests, while Amateur Membership includes wording about an amateur “voice” and an “appointed representative.”

Voting / consultation: The Rules publish AGM and election arrangements. Ordinary amateur voting rights were not confirmed in the reviewed public material.

Support routes: Public contact, safeguarding and complaints routes are available, together with National League contact/enquiry routes

BCDC

British Competitors Dancesport Corporation

Representation: Describes itself as providing “the voice for British DanceSport competitors” and states that members can raise questions or issues for BCDC to take to the British Dance Council.

Voting / consultation: Amateur membership is stated as non-voting. Its Constitution also sets out AGM and membership governance arrangements.

Support routes: Public contact and safeguarding routes are available, and its Equality/Diversity policy includes a complaints route.

EADA

English Amateur Dancesport Association

Representation: Describes itself as “The Voice of English Amateur Dancers.” Its membership page states that members have representation on the British Dance Council, and its Articles provide for at least one parent representative on the General Council. A current named parent representative was not identified in the reviewed public material.

Voting / consultation: Members are stated to be able to attend and vote at the AGM.

Support routes: Public membership, general contact and safeguarding information is available

BDF

The Ballroom Dancers' Federation Ltd

Representation: BDF states that it represents its members at British Dance Council meetings and that members’ concerns can be raised there. Its published terms also state that Amateur Registrants are entitled to representation at the British Dance Council.

Voting / consultation: Full Members are entitled to attend and vote at General Meetings, subject to the published membership rules. Amateur Registrants are stated not to have voting rights or General Meeting attendance rights.

Support routes: Members can write to the Secretary, with correspondence considered by the Executive Committee. Public contact and safeguarding/reporting routes are also available.
